50th Jubilee Celebrations

Sunday, April 17th, 2016

A special Mass was concelebrated on Sunday 17 April marking 50 years since the opening of the ‘new’ St Francis de Sales church in Island Bay and to thank God for the life of our faith community during the past 50 years.  Cardinal John Dew led the celebrations along with Parish Priest David Dowling. Also present were Fr Paul Shannahan SM, whose first appointment was to St Francis de Sales in 1965.  Fr Denis O’Hagan SM, the first priest to be ordained in the new St francis de Sales.  Fr Owen Sinclair, the first diocesan priest appointed to the parish and Fr Kevin Mears SM.

The prestigious Papal Honour, the Benemerenti Medal, was presented to Tony and Eileen Muollo during the Jubilee Mass. The award acknowledges the example of God’s love that Eileen and Tony have demonstrated in their commitment and support to each other, family, Parish and the wider community over many years of service.

Following Mass parishioners gathered for a morning tea at the Island Bay Bowling Club.

Children’s Mass and Parish Seminar

Sunday, June 28th, 2015

Sunday 14 June 2015

On another beautiful Wellington morning, I came away from our Sunday Mass reminded of Sr. Mary’s quote in her June reflection – “An attitude of gratitude”.

Children of our parish, with the parent support team, lead the music, proclaimed The Word in the readings and shared the Prayers of the Faithful.

At the end of Mass we heard from representatives of the Joshua Catholic Men’s Fellowship and the men of our parish were invited to find out more about the organisation and join them at their monthly meetings.

The Presider at Mass was Fr. Francis D’Souza from ICPE Mission.
As part of their Outreach members from the School of Mission joined us at Mass and after Communion shared a reflection in sign language and movement to music.
After a cup of tea following Mass, the children joined one team from ICPE in the hall. In the church another team shared insights they had gained and how their lives had been touched and changed by the love of Jesus.

May Children’s Mass

Sunday, May 10th, 2015

Our regular monthly Children’s Mass had an extra special dimension on Sunday as it was Mother’s Day.
The Children’s Choir sang ‘Ka Waiata Ki a Maria’, a hymn venerating Mary, the mother of Jesus, for accepting her role as mother of future generations.

We also welcomed visitors from St. Bernard’s Parish, Brooklyn
who joined us for Mass and a cup of tea afterwards.
