“St Francis de Sales Church Seismic Strengthening Update

The initial cost estimate in 2013 to strengthen the church building was $350,000. A design document was subsequently prepared and a quantity surveyor’s cost estimate was obtained earlier this year ($500,000 excl. GST). $22,000 has been spent in consultancy fees to obtain the necessary design documents. Following this expenditure there is $95,792 in the fundraising Account. This sum includes a recent generous $20,000 donation from a parishioner. A few parishioners are also contributing regularly to the fundraising account and this is also very much appreciated.  An Earthquake strengthening campaign group has been formed, which will be chaired by Kieran O’Sullivan. Funds are required to be raised not only for seismic strengthening, but also for refurbishment/altering of the Church building so that it becomes a more suitable space for worship and hospitality. This may require an amount in the order of $800,000.

Prior to further fundraising occurring, the Archbishop’s permission is required. This is because the previous authorisation to fundraise was limited to paying for consultancy fees to ascertain the extent of the work required to strengthen the building.

The other parishes in the Wellington South Pastoral Area will be consulted about the parish’s plans, and a formal request will be made to the Archbishop early in the new year to continue fundraising for strengthening the church.”
